Downsizing Our Consumption Norms with Changed Portion Sizes

Maintaining a strict portion size is the central theme of mindful eating. But is it always the same? Since the past decade, the food we eat and the quantities we get have changed broadly, which challenges the existing portion size norms. The same cookies or the bread we get in supermarkets are more calorie-dense than those we used to get decades back. Packet sizes, plate sizes, and hotel servings have doubled up for the same labels. Due to these hidden changes, we fail to maintain the required portion sizes and eat more calories in every meal. Even though we can’t eliminate these items, we can change small things like taking small plates, weighing portions before eating, or starting with smaller servings to avoid mindless stuffing.
